Unique master’s thesis opportunity at the University of Twente

ECIU University seeks students who want to make a difference, take responsibility, and cocreate a sustainable future with new mindsets, behaviours, ways of learning, thinking and working in support of new solutions, technologies and innovations. The big idea for 2022 is to develop a concept for a climate neutral campus with innovative designs and bold solutions and thereby, advance climate protection and reduce CO2 production. Students are to develop a concept that enables their home university or any other university and organisation to have a climate neutral campus in the future.

Strategic Challenge

The strategic challenge involves writing a master’s thesis with respect to a workload of about 900 hours (or about 30 ECTS). Timescale, examination and grading are conducted according to the regulations in your programme.

According to ECIU University’s Challenge-Based-Learning (CBL) framework, the strategic challenge includes three phases:

  1. Phase of engagement: Students from 12 different European universities enter the challenge team, narrow down the topic, develop essential questions, and define their precise challenge.
  2. Phase of investigation: Research and activities are done to define a solution to the challenge. Though each student works towards his or her own master’s thesis, ways of collaboration within the challenge team will be created in this phase.
  3. Phase of action: Solutions are prepared, and master theses are written. The challenge team opens the findings for society (includes implementation / delivering a product).

Additional and continuous reflection and documentation will accompany all three phases, as well as pursuing opportunities to share with the wider community.

Added bonus

You will be part of a team of about 15 international students from different ECIU universities, who will together work on this challenge. So your Master thesis is part of a bigger project – a project that you as a team decide upon what it will be.

Meetings with your team members, including face to face meetings on one of the universities, are part of this project.

When? February to July 2022.
Who? Master’s students from IDE, BME, Create or other engineering discipline can apply (please seek approval from the examination board of your study).
How? If YOU are interested, please contact the supervisor preferably before 22 November 2021.

Supervisor: Dr. Ir. Kostas Nizamis. Expertise: Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Design Engineering, email: k.nizamis@utwente.nl

Mini-challenge taster opportunity

You have the opportunity to warm-up for your master’s thesis by participating in a Mini Challenge on the same topic (24 November to 15 December). It is a good way to develop understanding and background knowledge. It is not mandatory to participate in the Mini Challenge though. For more information see here: https://challenges.eciu.org/challenges/2469991/climate-neutral-campus-in-europe

University of Twente is the Dutch member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU; https://www.eciu.org/), the leading international network of research intensive universities, with collective emphasis on innovation, creativity and societal impact. In January 2022 ECIU University - an EU-funded initiative of the alliance of 12 universities in the ECIU that creates a ground-breaking and innovative educational model on a European scale - will run its first ever Strategic Challenge based on the big idea: climate neutral campus in Europe. This will happen in the shape of 12 master’s thesis from across Europe.
