Honorary Members
When ConcepT appointed me an honorary member, I thought and still think it was a great honour. The reason for my appointment was with the students themselves. In 1986, I was appointed professor of Civil Engineering with the aim of developing education and research in the field of Civil Engineering at the University of Twente. In 1992, that objective was extended to the Civil Engineering and Management programme, of which I am the building pastor. There are many great and good stories about that period, but that is beyond the scope of this post.
ConcepT played an important role in those early days. Students made their own networks with fellow students. In the early stages, ConcepT needed some support and I was happy to give it to them. In turn, they made me an honorary member of ConcepT. Something I am still proud of.

After studying chemistry in Nijmegen in the 1960s, working at the UT in Chemical Engineering and the Education Centre, interrupted by three years in Indonesia at the Institut Teknologi Bandung, I joined what was then called Civil Engineering and Management in 1993. The programme was entering its second year and the academic staff was very busy with enervating discussions on what the programme should and should not entail. But in the meantime, the day-to-day teaching had to continue and an experienced regulator who was completely impartial was useful. And so I moved to CE&M. A few years later, that became a formal position as programme director. I took a broad view of that position. For instance, I wrote a weekly column in the faculty newspaper with a relativising view on the state of affairs at UT and for two years I gave cooking lessons to CE students who wanted something different from pasta with jarred sauce. My contacts with ConcepT and ConcreeT were always frequent and pleasant, which must have led to me being made an Honorary member one afternoon during the ConcepT lunch. I still enjoy it!

Marijn Horstman was appointed an honorary member of ConcepT in 2021. Throughout his studies at the University of Twente he was extremely active in all aspects of ConcepT. He did a board year in 2012 as the Officer of Educational Affairs. Besides that, he was very active in the Media Committee, and you could say that he is the architect of nearly all the digital infrastructure of ConcepT that is still used to this day. He was also very active in the Borrel committee and was also named ‘EreBorrelBikkel’ of the Borrel Committee. During his time at ConcepT, he was the silent and driving power of ConcepT and was always available to help anyone out.
