With more bikes than inhabitants, the Netherlands can be seen as bicycle capital of the world. According to the CBS, there is more than 90.000 km of bicycle infrastructure in the Netherlands. This infrastructure varies from so called "bikestreets" to bicycle suggestion lanes and everything in between. With the sustainable development goals of the UN in mind, policy makers want to improve the bicycle infrastructure. But how can decision makers properly decide what investments are necessary?

During this lunch lecture, Ramon Oppers will tell you about the work Witteveen+Bos has done (and still does) to provide decision makers with insights about the bicycle infrastructure. We will discuss the whole process of creating a tool (the “Bicycle monitor” or “Fietsmonitor”) that provides those insights. This is a complex process that depends on multiple disciplines: from data scientists and traffic engineers to marketeers, policy makers and project managers.
