Deltares: Design, Construction, and Operation of the biggest Sea Locks in the world!

Recently one of the biggest Sea Locks in the world has been finalised and is ready for operation: Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen. The new sea lock enlarges the capacity of shipping navigation to the harbour in the city of Ghent making the lock complex at Terneuzen future proof. Deltares played a key role in ensuring the operational readiness of the Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen (NST). Scale model tests were conducted to analyse hydraulic behaviour under various lock operations. These tests helped optimize filling and emptying strategies to minimize structural stress. Field measurements were performed to evaluate operation of the lock for safety purposes. Results informed operational protocols for ships of varying sizes and drafts. Deltares’ work bridged scientific insight with the safe and efficient daily use of the lock.
